HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT TILE SIZE?

Choosing the right tile size goes beyond what fits in a space. There is a wide range of size options that can be used for different spaces in your home. Different tile sizes affect the overall look of a space, and can either enhance the intended look and feel or diminish it.

In this post, we explore the different aspects of tile size, how they influence the appearance of a space, and how to choose the right size.

CHOOSING TILE SIZE IN RELATION TO SPACE. The simplest way to choose the right size is to pick a measure in relation to your space. A large area, like an open kitchen and dining area, or a large living room, will be able to handle large tiles. A medium-sized space like a bathroom will work well with medium-sized tiles, and small tiles will be appropriate for a small area.

Start by measuring the space you will be tiling. Square meters will help you create a paper template that allows you to experiment with different shapes and tile sizes to create the design you like. When taking measurements, consider the cabinets and countertops you need to work around, as well as kitchen corners or islands. Keep in mind that with larger tiles, you won't have as much flexibility and space to work with the natural flow and structure of the floor. Installing larger tiles requires more care to ensure they are as uniform and level as possible. Smaller tiles are always easier to install and hide any flaws.

PLAYING WITH DIFFERENT TILE SIZES Different tile sizes produce different aesthetic results and influence how a room feels. Using one or two sizes/formats creates an elegant and simple environment. Using three or more different tiles increases the complexity of a space and makes it feel more compact.

LARGE SQUARE AND RECTANGULAR TILES. Large tiles, between 30-40cm wide or long, can make a room look bigger. The longer dimension of the lines can make the space look cleaner and more open. However, tiles larger than 45-60cm can overwhelm a small space like a bathroom or foyer.

SMALL TILES FOR SMALL SPACES. Depending on the size, shape, and pattern, small tiles can add depth to a space or add busyness and shrink it, making it feel more compact. Linear tiles and subway types can also add depth to a room and expand its appearance, especially in small spaces. Small tiles are also flexible in terms of design. Horizontal placement is the most classic, while herringbone adds a more modern and elegant touch. Still, horizontal placement will make the room look wider.

Square or hexagonal formats are ideal for small spaces such as bathrooms. Unlike larger tiles, these are easy to install and there are no awkward cuts resulting in tiles of varying sizes.

TILE SIZE AND GROUT COLOR. Larger tiles have fewer grout lines, creating a cleaner appearance, while smaller tiles have more grout lines, increasing the complexity and visual texture of the tiles.

If a contemporary aesthetic is important to you, then larger tiles will give you that look. On the other hand, if you want to strike the perfect balance between classic style with a fresh appeal, smaller format tiles will give you a busier and intricate appearance. Choose a grout color that is the same tone or similar to your tiles to create a seamless appearance.

Small and medium-sized pieces look great on kitchen backsplashes, wall art, and for adding borders and edges. With more grout lines, small tiles are an excellent choice for showers because they add more traction and slip resistance.
